Caution concerning space heaters

When the chill of winter sets in, there’s nothing quite as comforting as a warm home. But as we embrace the colder months, it’s important to remember that heating equipment, while essential, can also be hazardous. In fact, it stands as the second leading cause of home fires across our beloved United States, with over 65,000 incidents each year leading to tragic loss of life, numerous injuries, and millions in property damage.

Now, I’ll be the first to say, a portable electric space heater can be a handy source of supplemental warmth, especially on those frosty mornings. However, if not used properly, these devices can present serious risks, including fire, electric shock, and overloaded circuits. One critical point to remember is that space heaters require a dedicated circuit. Using a standard or convenient plug can easily overload your home’s electrical system, creating a serious fire hazard.

Whether it’s a heater without proper safety features, one placed too close to flammable objects, or simply plugged in carelessly—safety is something we cannot afford to overlook. Be very cautious with your heater’s plug and circuitry, as the convenience of warmth must never compromise safety.

So, as you prepare to ward off the winter cold, keep these safety tips close at heart:

  1. Certified Safe: Ensure your heater bears the mark of a recognized testing laboratory.
  2. Read Instructions: Take the time to review the manufacturer’s guide and safety labels.
  3. Inspect Regularly: Check your heater for frayed plugs or loose connections before each use.
  4. Never Leave Unattended: Always turn off heaters when leaving the room or going to bed, and keep pets and children at a safe distance.
  5. Use Properly: Space heaters are not designed to warm bedding, cook food, or thaw pipes—use them only as supplemental heat.
  6. Smoke Alarms: Make sure you’ve got working smoke alarms on every level of your home and test them monthly.
  7. Placement Matters: Keep heaters at least three feet away from anything that could catch fire, such as papers, clothing, or rugs.
  8. Avoid High Traffic Areas: Keep them out of doorways and places where they might cause someone to trip.
  9. Dedicated Circuit: Always plug space heaters into a dedicated circuit. Standard outlets or extension cords can easily become overloaded, creating a fire risk.
  10. Stable Surface: Set heaters on flat, level surfaces, avoiding carpets, cabinets, and tables.
  11. Unplug When Done: Always disconnect and store your heater properly when it’s no longer in use.

With a little care and attention, we can all stay warm and safe through the winter months. Stay warm, but be safe!

Sincerely and Roll Tide,
